Welcome to Tamar Counseling

YOU ARE NOT ALONE.      YOU MATTER.       THERE IS HOPE.

My Approach

Individual people have unique needs requiring personalized solutions. Therefore, my approach to treatment may vary depending upon the presenting problem, developmental stage, and goals of the client. I take an affirming, anti-oppression, and anti-racist stance with all my clients with sensitivity toward and embrace of intersecting identities. I view problems through the lens of attachment with attention to neurobiology. Many traumas and mood disorders are effectively treated through EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) or Brainspotting, two related, specialized modalities in which I am certified. We will discuss treatment approaches to determine the best fit for your needs and goals.

Treatment Specialties

I specialize in helping you resolve traumatic and painful experiences from a trauma-informed lens, within a neurobiological and attachment framework. I am certified and experienced in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDRIA certified), an empirically validated treatment approach with the highest success rate in treatment of trauma. I am also certified in Brainspotting, another sub-cortical trauma treatment approach that emerged from EMDR that yields lasting results. I am a registered yoga teacher with specialized training in Trauma Sensitive Yoga, an evidence-based somatic treatment which helps to ground and empower survivors of chronic abuse. I am also trained in hypnosis and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). The approach we take with your treatment will be tailored to your specific needs, strengths, interest, and comfort through collaborative discussion and as you feel ready.

I am passionate about social justice in supporting my patients’ healing and take an affirming, anti-racist, growth-oriented and open stance of cultural humility in meeting the needs of my diverse clientele. I have walked this road, and I have helped many others navigate successfully and safely down this seemingly unsurpassable road, too. Healing is possible. Freedom awaits at the other side.

Frequently Asked Questions

If you're experiencing persistent feelings of sadness, anxiety, stress, nightmares, intrusive memories, or struggling to cope with life's challenges, therapy can help. Additionally, if you're finding it difficult to maintain healthy relationships, experiencing changes in sleep or appetite, or facing significant life changes or traumas, therapy can provide valuable support and guidance. Ultimately, if you're unsure, a consultation with a therapist can help assess your needs and determine if therapy is right for you.

The standard session length is 50 minutes. I also offer 80 minute sessions for those wishing to progress more rapidly.

I recommend weekly meetings with my patients for consistent support and progress toward goals. However, client’s goals, availability, and financial situations differ, and therapy might be scheduled twice a week, weekly, or bi-weekly to best meet your needs.

The approach we take with your treatment will be tailored to your specific needs, strengths, interest, and comfort through collaborative discussion and as you feel ready. It is my passion to help others grow from victim to victorious survivor, helping you to resolve dissonance between your beliefs and your experiences, facilitate harmony between thoughts and emotions, and create empowerment by strengthening internal and external supports. See my treatment specialities to explore different aspects of therapy that might address specific needs.

We begin therapy by identifying or setting goals, which can be referred back to periodically. Formalized assessments are also available for those wanting measurable data to compare. Generally, my patients know therapy is working for them as they find the number, intensity, and frequency of symptoms decrease, and feel more confident and empowered to handle the stresses of daily life.
